Notes From The Den 11-11-07

It's time for another Notes From The Den.

First off, I'd just like to say how disappointed I am in the voters in my home state of New Jersey. Last Tuesday we had a chance to vote for state funded stem cell research. Research that could lead to cures for many diseases...and yet more than 50% of the state voted against the measure. It's rare for me to say I'm ashamed to be from New Jersey, but realizing that there are people in my state that are against finding cures to diseases, I am.

Moving on.

So this past Monday on Lazlo's Den you heard my hour long interview with the publisher of Shocked and Amazed (www.shockedandamazed.com), James Taylor. What, you missed this interesting interview about sideshow acts and carneys? Well good news, the interview is now in the archive at www.LazlosDen.com, for you to listen to whenever you like.

I played some new music this week from Rat Wakes Red (www.ratdisk.com), Operator Please (www.operatorpleaseband.com), Walt Ribeiro (www.waltribeiro.net), Orbo & The Longshots (www.orbo.no), Bob Dylan re-visioned by Mark Ronson (www.dylan07.com/cmj code: DYLAN07CMJ ), Polytechnic (www.wearepolytechnic.com), Dale Ann Bradley (www.daleann.com), The Brunettes (www.thebrunettes.co.nz) , and Sharif (www.sharifmusic.com).

I also dug into the Den vault for some classic nuggets from The Stems (www.thestems.com.au), Dolly Parton (www.dollyparton.com), Evelyn Forever (www.cdbaby.com/cd/evelynforever), Sugar (www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_(band) ), and Ednaswap (www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ednaswap).

Mind you, while looking for a web link for Sugar, the hugely influential 90's alt rock band fronted by Bob Mould (formerly of Husker Du), I was horrified to find that some shitty cover band (mind you I assume all cover bands are shitty based on the fact they aren't doing original music), has stolen their name! In this day and age is it too much to ask that a band do a quick search to see that no other band is already using the band name??? Generally a Google or MySpace search will let you know if the band name is already being used. Sadly, it seems people are too lazy to do that, as I saw a band try to use the band name Billy Pilgrim recently, despite the fact that there was a band in the 90's signed to a major label with that name (that had limited airplay with a great song called, "sweet Louisiana sound"...hmm...maybe I'll play that on the Den this week), and I know another band that tried to use the band name of one of the bands listed above despite me telling them it was being used already. I won't mention their names.

Oh, and for those who didn't tune in when I played Ednaswap, I played their song, "torn", a song which several years after Ednaswap wrote and recorded it as a dark ballad, Natalie Imbruglia came along and covered it as a light airy pop song. I don't hate Natalie's take on it, but if you've ever heard the Ednaswap version, I think you'll agree it's the better one. Shame their version had no pop success.

The bluegrass set I did on Thursday's show, which included the aforementioned Dale Ann Bradley (whose album would be a contender for my album of the year this year, if only the album came out this year), and Dolly Parton, as well Citizens Band Radio (who you can see live at Buddie's Tavern on November 24th for a BlowUpRadio.com free concert), made some new friends, and probably turned some people off, but remember that Lazlo's Den is about musical diversity. In the same show I also played garage-pop, folk rock, and whatever you want to consider Blue Man Group.

So what does Lazlo's Den have in store for this week?

You'll have to tune in Monday thru Thursday at 8pm ET to find out.

Peace,
Lazlo
