Slo-Mo - "smokey mountain"

Trying to describe Slo-Mo's music is kind of like describing a recipe for a delicious kitchen sink punch, a lot of different things go in, but what comes out is a wondrous tasty treat. Slo-Mo features Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner on slide guitar, bringing a country and blues vibe, Mic Wreka with the poetry and rhymes giving a little bit of a hip-hop flavor, three harmonious female singers (Sue Rosetti, Steph Hayes, and Lauren Hart) that bring some soul and a feel good vibe, plus Steve Demarest's funky bass, and drums and percussion by Mark Schreiber and Hoagy Wing. The end result is something that is not rock, hip-hop, country or blues, but does have elements of each in it.

"Smokey mountain", showcases a progression from Slo-Mo's last CD, "my buzz comes back". While Mic Wreka does the lion's share of the lead vocals, Mike Brenner sings lead on, "how do we win the war?", and Sue, Steph, and Lauren sing lead on several tracks, including a marvelous cover of TLC's, "waterfalls", that gives the song a whole new vibe.

The lyrics get heavy on songs like the aforementioned, "how do we win the war?", and, "5am", where Mic Wreka tells the heartbreaking story of a woman whose once promising life went down hill because of substance abuse. But in general Slo-Mo keeps things upbeat, positive, and fun, like on, "odd couple", which speaks to the weird combination of people and sounds that is Slo-Mo.

Often times people say a band has a, "truly original sound", but it is still similar to other things out there. With Slo-Mo, I can't think of any other band that sounds quite like them. Unique, original, fun...why are you still reading this review? By the CD and hear it for yourself.
