Paul Sanchez - "washed away"
Paul Sanchez - "between friends"

For many years Paul Sanchez was one of the singer-songwriters in New Orleans rock band, Cowboy Mouth. All the while, Paul released solo albums, containing many songs that have gone on to become staples of Cowboy Mouth's live show. Twenty four of these songs are now compiled on "washed away", his first release since parting ways with Cowboy Mouth last year. These songs are a "best of" if you will, of Mr. Sanchez's solo output, containing well known (to fans of Cowboy Mouth at least) songs like, "hurricane party", "Irish boy", "shotgun in my soul",and, "invincible", as well as lesser known, but equally good, songs like, "nasty evil clown", and, "footsteps I hear". This is an amazing collection, which showcases not only Paul's strong songwriting, but also his wonderfully laid back vocals that seem to effortlessly emote. Whether you're a life-long fan, or new to Paul Sanchez, this is a must have collection of songs. A little side note, the CD is entitled, "washed away", because Paul and his wife lost everything, including the master tapes of the songs on this CD, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home. Paul asked his fans to send him CDRs of his albums so he could put this compilation together, and they not only complied, many I'm told, sent him original copies of the CDs.

The other CD that Paul Sanchez put out this year, "between friends", is all new compositions of his, with a strange twist, he only sings one of the 13 songs on the album. Employing friends as diverse as John Boutte, Susan Cowsill (The Cowsills), Darius Rucker (Hootie & The Blowfish), Mark Mullins (Bonerama), and Kevin Griffin (Better Than Ezra) to sing on the album, Paul wrote each song with the specific singer in mind. This allows for each song to resonate with it's own feeling. One of the most surprising tracks is "leaving", sung by Jim "Soni" Sonifeld, the drummer for Hootie & The Blowfish. I never would have suspected how good a singer he is, as he doesn't get the opportunity to sing much in his own band. Susan Cowsill's singing contributions on, "Mexico", and, "itty bitty", showcase both her soulful old-time country ballad roots and her playful ability to sing a song for kids that adults will enjoy too, respectively. While I'd love to hear Paul Sanchez's vocals on every track, I know that's not what this album was about. This album literally is, "between friends", and whereas bringing all these people together, each bringing their own feel to a song, could have made a disjointed album, because of Paul's writing style this CD flows like a proper album and not just like a compilation.
