George Stanford - "the EP"

Listening to George Stanford's new EP prior to reading his bio, I didn't realize this was the same guy who once fronted one of Philly's foremost bands, Townhall. Since Townhall dissolved in 2006, George Stanford moved to California, signed with Epic records (which due to a corporate shake up now puts him on Mercury records), and has apparently found his inner singer-songwriter. The 5 songs that comprise, "the EP", show that the sparse instrumentation, compared to his Townhall days, only makes his songs more resonant (if a little less playful and fun). "My own worst enemy", and, "Nikole", showcases a piano balladry that fans of Ben Folds are sure to take a shine to. "Heartbeat", is a simple folk-pop song that actually reminds me of NJ singer-songwriter Anthony Fiumano. "Let's stay here", the most upbeat sounding of the tracks, has a little more instrumentation to it, but uses it to good effect to create a folk-pop song that uses some bluesy guitar riffs in it. Closing out, "the EP", is, "downriver", a live recording that is a beautiful ballad. Listening to these 5 songs make me eager to hear George Stanford's full length CD due early next year.
