BR549 - "dog days"

BR549 have been making classic country sounding records for over 10 years now, and "dog days" is another great one to add to that collection. Not a trace of modern pop-country to their sound, BR549 have always made albums that call back memories of classic Sun Studio country recordings. These days it seems that this sound falls more into alt-country then country, and that's really sad. Highlights include "Lower Broad S. blues", which has an almost depression era jazz/bluegrass sound to it, and "the devil & me", which sounds like a lost chestnut from the early days Elvis Presley's career (thanks in part to the Jordanaires guesting on the track). Other notable tracks are "cajun persuasion", with it's country meets zydeco sound, and a cover of Tim Carroll's, "after the hurricane", which is probably the catchiest tune on this disc, with a sing-along chorus. The song was written and recorded before Hurricane Katrina, but has become even more poignant in the aftermath. The other cover on the album, Dave Edmunds's, "A-1 on the jukebox", sadly may be the most honest song ever about BR549 with it's chorus, "But I'm A-1 on the jukebox, nowhere on the charts".
