BoDeans - "still"

A friend of mine recently commented that he saw the BoDeans new album, "still", in the "Emerging Artists" section of a department store. It's funny how nearly three decades into your career, and having had a top 10 hit with, "closer to free", you can still be considered an "emerging artist".

But such seems to be the curse of being the BoDeans. Even at the height of "closer to free"'s popularity (when it was used as the theme song to "Party Of Five"), more people knew the song then the band. In a perfect world, the magnificent new album "still" would change all that, but I'm not sure that their roots rock sound can find a place on today's strictly regimented commercial radio.

I really hope I'm wrong though, because the 12 songs on this album show that the BoDeans best creative years are not behind them. "Round here somewhere" and "the first time" are beautiful mid-tempo roots-pop songs that may be their best chance for commercial success, but for me the rockabilly stomp of "Lucille" is the best hidden gem on this album.

"Still" marks another fruitful collaboration for the BoDeans with producer T-Bone Burnett. If you like good mid-tempo roots rock/pop, buy "still" now, before this "emerging artist" breaks out.
