Backyard Tire Fire - "vagabonds and hooligans"

Several months ago I was lucky enough to see Backyard Tire Fire open for Will Hoge. They put an incredible upbeat roots rock set that was not just a perfect precursor to Will Hoge's set, but also was just a great set in it's own right. On their new CD, "vagabonds and hooligans", Backyard Tire Fire takes a more low key approach, with mellower roots rock songs that at times (such as the title track) veers into a folksier direction. While at first it was a bit surprising to me, it ultimately shows that Backyard Tire Fire are talented enough to be upbeat when it's appropriate, but be laid back and relaxed too. One of the most fun and upbeat songs on the disc is, "Tom Petty", where lead singer Ed Anderson sings, "I want to be Tom Petty". The band certainly has the vibe that Petty has done so well in the 90's through today (when he started to get more roots sounding). At times I also hear a hint of Counting Crows in their sound. I could go on and on trying to explain this album, but just do yourself a favor and give it a listen for yourself.
