Beatallica @ Asbury Lanes - 7/8/07

Sunday July 8th was a day I was looking forward to seeing Beatallica play Asbury Lanes, but then a family emergency came up that stressed me out and almost kept me from seeing the band whose bio describes them as, "if Hetfield and Lars listened to as much Beatles "Revolver" and the "White Album" as they did Diamond head and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal."

The family emergency over, I darted down to the Lanes just in time to hear the opening strums of , "rev-ooo-lut-ion". It appeared that I had not missed much of their set.

Beatallica is not a cover band (thankfully), rather what Beatallica does is what they refer to as a, "bash-up". Kind of like a mash-up, Beatallica's "bash-ups" combine music & lyrics from Beatles & Metallica songs (with some new lyrics thrown in as necessary), turning them into something that's identifiable as having parts of both, but is really, in many cases, an entirely new song. Far from being a joke band (although their songs are certainly funny at times), Beatallica shows a creativity that no cover band would. Who else but Beatallica would combine Metallica's, "The Call of Ktulu", with the Beatles's, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", to get, "Ktulu (she's so heavy)"?

To have this kind of creativity the musicians involved have to be talented, and the 4 guys who make up Beatallica (who each play in other bands) are extremely talented musicians, their skills displayed throughout the night on songs like, "blackened the USSR", "I want to choke your band", and, "a garage days night"

Their set, a combo of metal and pop, is so much fun, that any stress I had going into the show from events earlier in the day, was replaced by pure joy. Raise your Devil Horn Hands, Beatallica Rocks!
