Newsletter 8-7-12

Hey Everyone,

Apologies for the lack of newsletter last week, or new Lazlo’s Den. My day job is crushing me, which takes away precious time and energy from doing this.

While I love doing BlowUpRadio.com/Lazlo’s Den, it is hobby and does not pay the bills, so occasionally I can’t do it all.

I did continue to make updates to the site last week, and even got out to a couple of shows which you can read reviews of on BlowUpRadio.com, but other things had to be put off as a result.

I hope not to make this a frequent problem, but as a one man operation (with the help of some wonderful DJs and reviewers), everything falls on me, which is I love...except when I don’t have the time to keep up. Then I just feel like I’m letting you all down.

This October BANDING TOGETHER – A BENEFIT WEBATHON FOR THE SPONDYLITIS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA will returns to BlowUpRadio.com. Over 50 bands are already signed up to perform live during the webathon as we try to raise money to a cause near and dear to me (my wife suffers from ankylosing spondylitis). If you are a musician and want to be involved, e-mail me. We would love to have even more bands involved!

We’ll have more info as we get closer to October.

ABOUT SPONDYLITIS (from http://www.spondylitis.org)
Spondylitis (pronounced spon-d-lie-tiss) is the name given to a group of chronic or long lasting diseases. These diseases are forms of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affect the spine, although other joints and organs can become involved. Spondylitis, unlike many other rheumatic (arthritic) conditions, affects young adults and commonly begins before the age of 35. Prominent researchers have stated that AS affects at least 1 in every 200 adults (approximately 0.5%) making it as common as rheumatoid arthritis.
Although there is currently no known cure, there is much you can do to educate yourself regarding Spondylitis and its treatments. There have been significant advancements in medical treatments during recent years and there are treatment options for those afflicted that can reduce the pain and symptoms of Spondylitis.

Been listening to a lot of great music lately, but sadly I don’t have time to write full length reviews of each. So below are quick blurbs about some of the albums.

Trust me when I say all of these are worth checking out. Support Good Music!

ANIMAL PARTS eponymous new album (out 8/21) is a wonderful piece of Americana…done by a Canadian band. A mixture of laid back folksy songs, and uptempo roots rockers, this album is an absolute keeper!

Back in February I raved about the infectious choruses on BELLE HISTOIRE’s EP. They are now back with a full length album, “DREAMERS”, which has a summer fun hit in, “everyday”. Sure it is pop, but I refuse to think all pop is bad, Often, vocalist Jane Smith reminded me of The Cranberries vocalist, Dolores O’Riordan. Much like what I said about their EP, their more mellow songs were not my favorite, but did not hurt my enjoyment of the album.

“BIG BEAT ‘59” stirs a lot of thoughts inside ones head, and is a pretty damn good title for the awesome album by BLACK PISTOL FIRE. The album opens with a clap along almost gospel sounding song in “Beelzebub”, before veering into the loud blues garage fuzz of “stripes or keys” (could it be about the White Stripes & Black Keys? It would certainly fit their sound if it were). From there the album continues to rock right through until the end. Crank it up, enjoy!

Waking up on a weekend I like to ease in with some relaxing, yet upbeat music. Putting on BRUCE TUNKEL’s new album, “DRAW THE LINE”, was perfect. I don’t know if you would call it folk-pop, or roots-pop, but it ultimately doesn’t matter what you call it, just that you give this album a listen. The songs are wonderful, and catchy. If I could sing, I would sing along to ‘em all. Listening to this album made me feel good inside, and I don’t mean that in a new-agey way, just that these are songs that made me happy. What more could you ask for from music. Bruce Tunkel plays a rare live gig on Friday August 10th @ Riverside Gardens Park in Red Bank (Willie Nile is also on the bill)

GUIDED BY VOICES new album, “CLASS CLOWN SPOTS A UFO”, is yet another GBV album chock full of rock (and a few more acoustic) gems. But what else would you expect from the always prolific Robert Pollard?

HOLY GHOST TENT REVIVAL are a six piece band that crafts lush, glorious old-time, upbeat, soulful, folk-pop. Their new album, “SWEAT LIKE THE OLD DAYS” (out on 9/4), shows that a band known for their live performances can capture that same live feel on an album.

JON SNODGRASS’ new EP, “MORE BUDDIES, MORE FUN”, opens with a country-folk ballad, followed by an upbeat, fun pop-rocker in a Soul Asylum meets Bob Mould sort of way, then a laid back acoustic song, and closes with another folk-ballad. 4 songs in 11 minutes, short, but oh so sweet.

Do you like Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson? Then odds are you will also like JON SAMUEL’s new album, “FIRST TRANSMISSION” (out on 8/28). It has that same wonderful vibe to it, and a lovely falsetto voice.

LOST IN SOCIETY rock and they want you to know it on their new album, “LET IT SAIL”. Is it Hard Rock? Punk Rock? Garage Rock? Fuck it, it’s just rock, pure and adrenalized! In a perfect world these guys would be playing the same big stages Foo Fighters play, but for now at least we are lucky enough to be able to see them rock on smaller stages, like Asbury Lanes, which they will be playing on Sunday August 12th.

For years I have been a casual fan of REEL BIG FISH. Seen them numerous times on the Warped Tour, and a few times as a headliner, and while they have always put on an excellent live show, I was never a big enough fan of their songs to own any album other than their major label debut (you know the one with their biggest hit, “sell out”, “turn the radio off”). However, I absolutely love their new album, “CANDY COATED FURY”. It not only captures the joy of their live show, but it is a fun, cohesive album. They also included inspired covers of The Wonder Stuff’s “don’t let me down gently”, and When In Rome’s “the promise”. And how can you not love an album that opens with, “everyone else is an asshole”?
