This October BANDING TOGETHER – A BENEFIT WEBATHON FOR THE SPONDYLITIS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA will returns to BlowUpRadio.com. Over 50 bands are already signed up to perform live during the webathon as we try to raise money to a cause near and dear to me (my wife suffers from ankylosing spondylitis). If you are a musician and want to be involved, e-mail me. We would love to have even more bands involved!
We’ll have more info as we get closer to October.
ABOUT SPONDYLITIS (from http://www.spondylitis.org)
Spondylitis (pronounced spon-d-lie-tiss) is the name given to a group of chronic or long lasting diseases. These diseases are forms of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affect the spine, although other joints and organs can become involved. Spondylitis, unlike many other rheumatic (arthritic) conditions, affects young adults and commonly begins before the age of 35. Prominent researchers have stated that AS affects at least 1 in every 200 adults (approximately 0.5%) making it as common as rheumatoid arthritis.
Although there is currently no known cure, there is much you can do to educate yourself regarding Spondylitis and its treatments. There have been significant advancements in medical treatments during recent years and there are treatment options for those afflicted that can reduce the pain and symptoms of Spondylitis.
From the depths of Monmouth County, NJ comes some great experimental indie pop courtesy of the strangely titled JULIAN FULTON AND THE ZOMBIE GOSPEL. No, I don’t know why they are a “Zombie Gospel”, I figure a zombie gospel choir would be all toneless guttural grunts, but far from that, Julian and his “zombie” cohorts album, “HEART & ARMS”, are six songs that show a myriad of indie pop sounds. From the aptly titled opener, “prelude”, to the jangly, swaying closer, “wishing well (a fool’s waltz)”, the album showcases the ability to remain infectious listening with lots of lovely harmony, while creating unique and diverse soundscapes for their journey. Now that I think about, in some ways they are not unlike The Flaming Lips. I hope their next offering is a full length. Check them out for yourself by downloading their song, “lie”, for free here:
Speaking of infectious music, check out the hooks and harmonies that LATE CAMBRIAN have on their new, “SOCIAL SEASON EP”. Listening to this album got me up on my feet, bopping around the studio with a big grin on my face, and that was before I new Wheatus’ Brendan Brown appears on the EP. If there is any downside to the fun Late Cambrian is, is that the album is only 5 songs (7, if you include the radio & clean versions of two songs). I want more!
A few years back I saw FLATFOOT 56 at the Warped Tour and really enjoyed what they refer to as their “positive-natured brand of hardcore-tinged Celtic punk”. Their new album, “TOIL” showcases that sound splendidly. It’s not that what Flatfoot 56 does is groundbreaking, there are many bands out there doing a similar sound, but Flatfoot 56 happens to do it very well.
And I leave you this week with a live video of David Byrne & Amanda Palmer doing a stunning rendition of the Talking Head’s classic, "Burning Down the House".
